My Cricut Journey: 10 Tips I Wish I Knew as a Beginner
When I first started my Cricut journey, I was excited about all the beautiful things I could create. Personalised tumblers, stickers, gifts, cards and so many other creative projects suddenly seemed possible.
But then came the reality of actually using the machine!
There were designs I couldn't figure out, vinyl that didn't behave the way I expected, weeding that tested my patience and plenty of moments where I thought, "What am I doing wrong?"
I've realised that being a beginner is completely okay. You don't need to know everything before you start. A lot of Cricut crafting is about experimenting, making mistakes and learning along the way.
Here are 10 things I wish I knew when I started my Cricut journey.
1. You don't need everything at once
When you first enter the Cricut world, it can be tempting to buy every tool, material and accessory you see.

Start with the basics and learn what you actually enjoy making. You can always add more materials and tools as your skills develop
2. Learn your materials
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that not all vinyl is the same.
Permanent vinyl, removable vinyl, printable vinyl and different specialty materials all have different uses.
Before cutting a project, take a moment to check whether the material you're using is suitable for what you're making. This can save you from wasting both material and money.
3. Always test before committing to a big project
If you're making something for the first time, do a small test cut first.
It is much better to discover that your settings aren't right on a tiny piece of vinyl than after you've used half a sheet.
4. Weeding takes patience
I'll be honest, weeding vinyl has tested my patience!
Those tiny pieces that refuse to come off, letters that lift when you don't want them to and designs that look perfect on screen but suddenly become complicated in real life are all part of the learning process.
Good lighting, a sharp weeding tool and patience can make a huge difference.
5. Don't be afraid to experiment
Some of my favourite ideas have come from simply looking at the materials I already have and asking, "What can I make with this?"
6. You don't have to spend a fortune
Crafting can become expensive if you aren't careful. There are also free resources available online, and you can create beautiful projects without buying every premium design or subscribing to every service.
7. Take your time learning Design Space
Cricut Design Space can feel overwhelming when you're new. Learn one feature at a time and build confidence gradually.
8. Mistakes are part of the process
Every mistake teaches you something that makes your next project better.
9. Photograph your projects
Documenting your progress allows you to look back and see how far you've come. Those photos can also become future portfolio and social media content.
10. Just start creating
Don't wait until you're an expert. Start with what you have. Make something. Make a mistake. Try again. Watch tutorials, ask questions and experiment.
